“My brother let his anger get the best of him and as a result his wife died, he’s in jail, leaving seven children behind,” says Epenesa Aumua. Epenesa is the sister of Mauola Taumaloto who is currently in jail after he allegedly assaulted his wife, who died as a result.

The Samoa Observer visited the residence of Mauola in Saluafata, where Mrs Aumua said what occurred was an “unintentional incident.”

“They were arguing over how each of them treated their little ones, then my brother lost it and slapped his wife. She fell down the stairs, hit her head.

“It was an argument that heated up, led to a slap, that led to the death of my sister-in-law Mrs Sala Mauola, who leaves behind seven children...” The eldest daughter is 15 years old while the youngest child is just a year year old.

The incident happened last Tuesday.

Mrs Aumua pointed out, “Self control is relatively important in life especially when you have anger issues and for my family, my brother has had to learn the hard way. I know he’s suffering because he did not want this, now she’s gone, he’s in jail and their seven children are left with no parents.

“My brother never wanted that, but because he couldn't control his anger ...”

The visibly emotional sister, said that one mistake changes everything; changes everyone’s lives.

“It’s a mistake that could've been avoided, but it’s too late now.

“I hope this incident can be a guiding light to the families of Samoa to get help if you have anger issues.

“Anger can cause so much chaos in a family, but that can change if you know how to control yourself.”

Mrs Aumua said it was her brother and his wife who also looked after their elderly parents.

“Now he's behind bars, I have to make certain changes in my family to cater to the needs of my parents and especially my nieces and nephews who are now parentless.

“It’s heartbreaking what has happened, but I want to let this be a lesson to all couples out there and everyone, even for my husband and myself, get professional help if you have anger issues.

“Pray for help from our heavenly Father, but don’t let it ruin your life.

“Anger can change your life forever in a blink of an eye...”

She said that their family has already reached out to Sala’s family. They held a traditional forgiveness ceremony (ifoga) and it was accepted by Sala’s father.

Regarding her brother, Mrs Aumua said they took Mauola to the police station, following the incident and he’s been held in custody since last week.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson, Su’a LeMamea Tiumalu confirmed that Mr Mauola has been charged with murder and will appear in court sometime this month.

Su’a declined to go into details of the matter noting the sensitivity as it’s a domestic violence case and the defendant will soon appear in the Supreme Court for criminal mention.
