Gambling is fuelled by greed and it robs people of their happiness.

So says 50-year-old Sene Vaoesea of Faleasi’u who is concerned about the growing number of Samoans relying on lotto and bingo for survival.

“The increasing number of gambling activities, like bingo in Samoa, is getting worse,” the mother of four said.

“Honestly, I’m not into gambling, and the sad thing is it is live on air and that is encouraging mothers to attend, forgetting their role in families especially looking after their daughters.”

“We all know that almost all churches, even families, are playing bingo to make money but honestly gambling, like many things in life, can become addictive.”

“We know mothers nowadays, they save all the money to play bingo and they tend to forget about their priority, their children.”

She added gambling destroyed families.

“It’s a major cause of family neglect; we see it and hear it every day.”

“As people get caught up in a gambling frenzy, they begin to neglect their families and their children.”

She believes a social implication of gambling is the increase in rape cases in our societies.

“Our daughters are left unattended while mothers play bingo from Monday to Friday,” she said.

“All they care about is saving their money for gambling; we must remind ourselves that God’s word teaches us parents to provide for our children and to provide for our families through our hard work and not through gambling.”

“Gambling tempts people to neglect family responsibilities, and I believe that’s why many families often end up living a poor life.”

“We must remember that whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.”

“Gambling is not an act of faith but a game of chance and thief.”

“We are Christians and we are taught that everything that is not of faith is sin, but we have to depend on Him to meet all our needs and according to his richness,” she said.
