Stay humble and support your family

Be humble and support your family in the best way you can.

For Aifiti Leota from Solosolo, that is how he lives.

The 50-year-old stays with his sister and her family.

He was on his way to feed his sister’s children when the Village Voice caught up with him.

“I have a plantation in this area where the primary school is located, that’s why I decided to come to work and bring my nieces and nephews some lunch,” he tells Village Voice.

“The plantation has been my way of making a living and making use of my time as long as I could remember.

“I used to live overseas but I moved back to Samoa in 1994 to help my sister take care of my parents and that’s how I started on this kind of work.

“I live at the inner village so I always have to take a bus when I come here because it’s a little bit far.

“While my sister works, I work my taro plantation to provide food.

“I’m just a simple person to work with and no matter how tired I am, I can never be used to being lazy around at home.

“Everything is going well here on our side; I know the cost of living is not the same anymore and as Samoans we always have obligations to contribute to but I’m thankful I have my sister here and other family relatives overseas to help out when we come to those situations.

“Nowadays everything comes with a price now and that’s why everyone is working hard.”

Mr. Leota has three children currently residing overseas with their mother.

“My family is used to their life there and the same goes for me here.

“They help out whenever they can.

“And as for me; I’m just a humble farmer helping out his family in Samoa at the moment and I’m really happy about that.”
