Settling back into life in Samoa is not an easy task.

So says 66-year-old father and grandfather, Faimafili Faiese, of Faleula.

The Village Voice caught up with him yesterday.

He said his family has just moved back from American Samoa and their priority is sourcing water and electricity.

“We are trying to get our water and electricity today,” he said.

“We have just moved back from American Samoa and at the moment our goal is to get us a house.”

“We are working towards a new house but the most important thing for now is water and electricity. We can’t live without those things.”

Faimafili said he has returned to Samoa to help his family.

“The only reason we went there was for our children’s schools, that’s our first priority.”

“Now that the kids have succeeded and they are now developing their own families. This is why I wanted to come back to Samoa to help develop my family.”

“We want to develop whatever land we have. At the moment we have no plantation to depend on, because we are new here.”

But that’s the only issue.

The elderly father also has health issues – namely a skin condition.

“I went to see a doctor when we were in American Samoa and they gave me some medicine. It hasn’t helped.”

“I’ve been to the doctor here and they also gave me a cream. Even that hasn’t helped.”

“I really need help for my skin, as you can see this is not good.”

He also spoke about the difference between the good old days and today.

“We were far more comfortable back then, it was cheap. Nowadays if you don’t have money you can’t do anything.”

But even though they struggle, Faimafili said they cannot give up.

“What is best for me is that my children have a better life now. They are developing their own families which is good to see.”
