While Samoa’s sevens team was battling it out in Sydney on Saturday and Sunday against international teams, there was still plenty of action at home for rugby fans.

Despite Saturday afternoon’s scorching sun, the Apia Union began their process of selecting teams for the Marist 7’s tournament.

Sixteen clubs from around Samoa participated in this competition for their chance at the $1000 prize and to make final changes to their sides.

Fuimaono Titimaea Tafua, the vice president of the Apia Union told Samoa Observer, “We have finally kicked off our tournament for 2016 to prepare the teams who have been invited to take part in the Marist 7’s.”

“We are happy to have finally begun our 7’s competition.” Auimatagi Sapani Pomare, coach ofthe Apia Maroons side, expressed how much these small competitions help all the teams involved. “These pre-tournaments really help out with preparations because usually the teams from the Apia Union always rank the highest at the Marist 7’s”

Lauli’i grabbed the Cup and was ranked in 1st place winning the $1,000 tala prize money in the tournament.

The Plate went to Apia Maroons and finally the Bowl was won by the Lions, also from Laului’i.

“After this tournament I can see that my team (Apia Maroons) needs to focus on fitness which we will begin first thing on Monday,” Auimatagi said.
