When you meet, Volker Welse, you would immediately think he is a tourist.

He could well be.

The man from Germany is a long way away from his home but here in Samoa, he feels just as comfortable.

In fact, Samoa is his second home for good reason.

“I could imagine staying here when I retire,” he said.

Mr. Welse comes to Samoa many times.

That’s because he married a beautiful Samoan woman he met in Lano Savai’i, where he has developed quite a close connection.

“It is a long trip but I have made it many times here in Samoa and I am married to a Samoan lady from Lano, Savai’i,” he said.

Mr. Welse and his Samoan wife were married in Lano two years ago.

They are currently staying in Germany but visit the island once a year not only for vacation but to visit families.

“We love coming back to spend some time here in the islands. It’s beautiful and we love it.”

Mr. Welse told the Samoa Observer he admired the friendliness of the people around him and he feels safe and secure in Samoa.

He also loves the Samoan people and the culture.

“I like the people, they are very friendly very polite and also helpful when you need them.”

With all the good memories and the good times that he had while in Samoa, Mr. Welse said he sees himself returning to Samoa for the long run.

“I can see myself retiring here, but who knows. We will see what will happen.”
