Obedience is the best gift

When you’re under your parents’ care, obedience is required.

Kuni Mailata of Lotopa knows this.

The 17-year-old told Village Voice this is something his parents remind him of every day.

“My parents are always telling my siblings and I that this is the way to a bright future,” he said.

Kuni is the third child of five siblings and they all attend Faleata College.

“As a teenager, I haven’t done much in life. At the moment, my concentration is on my education and how I’m going to be successful in the future.

“I know my parents are working to pay for all our school fees because they believe that we can make a better life for this family once we succeed.

“I understand that working to make a living is not easy, therefore we must make use of the money our parents are spending on our education.

“I look forward to achieving good things in the future as we are the future of Samoa.

Kuni says he helps his parents by doing chores like cleaning, cooking and taking care of his younger siblings.

He said, “Don’t be picky when it comes to opportunities because it doesn’t matter what school you are at or starting from, if you are learning something new and important every day, that is all that matters.

“Don’t be picky when it comes to education because other  parents cannot afford to put their kids in school.”

Kuni said the only way for young people to become successful citizens of Samoa is to equip their minds with knowledge and build their skills.

“But before all that; before you reach another step, you must obey your parents and your elders.

He added that there was no point to being successful in life if you do not listen to your parents.
