Since the start of Teuila Festival to the arrival of the Miss Samoa contestants, Savaiians cannot stop grinning from ear to ear in contagious excitement with the fun and festivities the Miss Samoa pageant has brought to the big island.

Savaii Samoa Tourism Association (S.S.T.A.) President, Vaaelua Faapoipoituuloa Gidlow said the Savaiians have come out shining and every effort has been made to ensure the first Miss Samoa pageant to be held in Savaii is a success.

“The positive energy can be felt around the whole island and many have made comment to how proud they are of this occasion,” Vaaelua said. “You can see it in the faces of people cheering along the roads, some with tears in their eyes and I have heard comments from the elderly who are reflecting on what’s happening on the island this week saying that they have not witnessed such an event in their entire lives.”

The nine contestants themselves have been good sports according to Vaaelua, sharing their readiness in contributing to a good cause by supporting the S.S.T.A’s recent campaign on Wednesday in Salelologa to Keep Savaii Clean.

Keeping Savaii Clean has been a major objective of the association since its establishment. Regular clean up days have been one way the association has been able to collectively boost awareness among the community.

“The association has been at the forefront fighting the issues of litter and we’re very appreciative that the Miss Samoa Contestants could come,” said Vaaelua. “We alone cannot tackle this problem but when we work together with government and private sector, the reality of having a clean rubbish free Savaii becomes that much closer. The S.S.T.A. is thankful for all the help it can receive and especially to the U.N.D.P. who granted assistance to the Asosi to help with their goals as well as Frankie’s Co Ltd and B.S.P.”

The S.S.T.A. with the assistance of U.N.D.P. funding this year have spearheaded their goal to Keep Savaii Clean, not just for the pageant but to continue this into the future.
