LOVING RUGBY LEAGUE: Pesega College Team

NRL Pacific in partnership with Digicel hosted the first Open Girls Rugby League tournament on Friday at the Marist Grounds in Lotopa.

The tournament is part of NRL’s ongoing efforts to encourage females to participate in what has been a male dominated sports for many years with the aim to provide young girls with an opportunity to showcase leadership and sportsmanship.

It included four teams with players ranging from the ages of 16 to 18 years selected to represent their schools. Keen young ladies from Pesega College, Papauta Girls College and St Mary’s College took the challenge and went head to head vying to be the inaugural winners of the tournament.

“It’s awesome to witness such ambition from the young ladies on the field today.

Clearly there is a lot of talent here that we would love to see them go further with rugby league as a career choice.

This is only the beginning and we plan to make this an annual event as a build on from our outreach programs that we are also doing at grass root level with the primary schools” says NRL Manager Gabrielle Apelu.

Digicel CEO, Rory Condon added “Digicel is delighted to partner with NRL to host the first Open Girls Rugby League Tournament.

The initiative drives awareness of rugby league as a great sporting choice for girls and young women, not only for fitness and health, but also to develop teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship.

These are key qualities that will stand to these young women throughout their lives.”
