The rising cost of living

07 July 2016, 12:00AM

The cost of living continues to increase in Samoa. Since the weekend, the price for basic food items like bread, sugar, salt among a range of other products have increased. And with the minimum wage remaining the same, the increase in the cost of living has been branded as another kick in the gut for the poor in Samoa. What do you think? Deidre Fanene asked in today’s Street Talk and this is what people said:

Helena Rokeni - Nuu

I know it’s affecting the people in so many ways but let’s face it, it’s life and we need to accept it. We are moving forward and that will come with a price tag. The government knows what’s best for us so I believe it’s time for us to start our plantation again so that we don’t have to spend money on bread and all those food when we can have healthy food from our own backyard.

Andrew Tupa’i - Faleula

The cost of living is horrible but what we do about it? The government has already decided to have this increase so it’s not like when we comment they will change their minds. We also have to look at it this way life is going forward and these changes ought to happen. In any other country, this is always the case the prices of things go up so that the government can get more money for their developments.

Sugalu Sugalu - Leauvaa

The increase in the cost is another burden. It’s so sad to see this. However, we can’t do much about it, because the government has already decided to raise the prices of the daily products so I guess what we can do is to accept it.

Angelina Sefo - Nuu

Well, I think it’s about time that we go back to our old ways. What I mean by going back is that we should start planting again, breadfruits, bananas and all of those food crops. We live at a time where life is going forward and it’s expensive so this is a wake up call for us to go back to where we started and that is the plantation.

Pemerina Taituuga Taotua - Vaimoso

Life is going forward and the cost of living is getting expensive, so it’s time for us to start planting again. We don’t need to spend money on things that we know we can get from our own backyard and plantation. If the bread is expensive, then consider buying other things that are cheaper like masi popo and all of that. With the prices of daily products going up this is all part of life and it’s all part of government plans for the betterment of our country.
