Pualele Outrigger Canoe Club (P.O.C.C) hosted a 25km paddle on Saturday to promote “Paddle for the Planet”.

The long distance change-over course ran from Taumeasina to Solosolo and back.

Eleven members of the P.O.C.C participated with a support team and support boat and covered the distance in just over two hours.

Paddle for the Planet is a Global Paddling Relay, which unites paddlers, creates awareness and is a movement for conservation.

There are simultaneous paddling events happening sequentially, at a specific time, in every time zone and in each country around the world.

The result was to unite paddlers of any type of paddling craft through the Global Relay. Paddle for the Planet aims to raise awareness and financial support for marine conservation specifically in the area of reserves and “no take zones”.

Pualele is in training for the 42km Savai’i Crossing race to be held on June 25th, and the 25km paddle was in preparation for this race but P.O.CC also wanted to use this opportunity to raise awareness.

P.O.C.C President Anthony Talouli said the activity is great for the Club.

“We’re gearing up for our Savai’i crossing that will be held at the end of the month and we used this opportunity to participate in a global event.“

Greg Sherley, long time Pualele member and environmentalist stated: “It is important to raise awareness of the priceless value of our oceans because they are the last reserve of the essentials of life itself on land and sea.”

Pualele would like to extend a special thanks to Greg and Brenda Sherley, members for over seven years, for their contribution to the club.

“P.O.C.C wishes them well on their return to NZ.”
