HARD WORKING MOTHER: Fa’aiu Taufafo is a mother of eight who loves working in her garden beside the road near her house at Falevao.

As Samoa and the world celebrate Mothers’ Day an elderly mother aged 78 does not want anything except that her family work together, peacefully as one.

Fa’aiu Taufafo is a mother of eight who loves working in her garden beside the road near her house at Falevao.

Age does not matter to Fa’aiu because what she is thankful for is that she has the strength to work for her children and family.

“This is what I do every day and I love doing it because it makes me strong and healthy,” she told Village Voice.

“My children tell me to stay home and take a rest but I can’t just take a rest when I see rubbish around my house and our family plantation.”

“Some people think that when they get old they shouldn’t work anymore but as for me, I love working.”

“Weeding and planting those are my things. I work together with my grandchildren making sure that they grow up and know very well what to do.”

Fa’aiu understands that her role as a mother is not easy because without a Mother there will be no more happiness within families.

“We all know the importance of mothers in our families. She does the work every hour, minute and second of our lives.”

“That is what I have to teach my grand-children making sure that when they have their family themselves they know what to do.”

“Without a mother, no one is going to do the work because she does the washing, cooking and everything else in our families.”

This week, with Mothers’ Day on its way Fa’aiu challenges other mothers of Samoa to make sure that their families are peaceful and happy.

“Some mothers go to bingo all week but they have to be with their families,  especially their children.”

“And we have to know how important we are as mothers; making sure that our families are living happily and working together as one.”

“And we need to see that all the things in our families are well prepared for their development.”

Even though that Fa’aiu said she sees that today’s life is far different from the olden days, she still believes in the love of a mother.

“What ever obstacles that come in life we as mothers have to be strong for our family and children.”

“Despite the high cost of living we still survive every day and give thanks to  God that we survive each day.”
