Samoa for real - Extraordinary Women in Sports Challenge!

07 March 2016, 12:00AM

The Samoa Women in Sports Commission (SWISC)  is getting ready to launch its Inaugural event, “Extraordinary Women in Sports Challenge” this Tuesday, 8th March to coincide with the celebration of the UN’s  International Women’s Day.

The event is a challenge for girls and women to compete in five(5) disciplines over the period of a month and will culminate with a day of seminars and workshops with inspirational speakers sharing their journeys and how they overcame the challenges along the way to be  where they are today.

“This challenge is to ourselves to push the boundaries; go outside of our comfort zones; try a new sport; build a network of supportive women and girls and build our confidence to lead sports in our Country and the region,” says Nynette Sass, Chairman of the Commission.

“This is not just for athletes. It is for everyone who is up to the challenge. Good healthy lifestyles mean an on-going engagement with sports & an exercise regime of any form! says Sass.

“This challenge means that the challengers can effectively do their sport comp in one afternoon/evening or if they progress to the next level then it could be two afternoons/week. The participants will collect points along the way to the overall winner’s prizes,” says Ulugia Jay Ah Fook Schuster, the Competition Manager.  “The National Federations will be running the competition on the Commission’s behalf. Some of the events will be using abbreviated scoring to ensure the schedule remains on target.”

The five sports involved include (i) Squash (ii) Lawn Bowls (iii) 5Km Run (iv) Shot Put (v) Outrigger Canoeing.

“There will be a Junior group of 14-18 year old girls and the Open group of over 18 at the start of the competition on the 15th March 2015. Transportation arrangements are being made for participants who do not have their own transport as we are aware of the security of the participants,” says Ulugia.

Contact the organisers for the Registration Form on [email protected]  or call Ariane Stevenson on 752-8605 and Ulugia Jay Ah Fook Schuster on 777-4434
