Organisers of the Opera under the Stars have presented $50,432 to the Archbishop Alapati Mataeliga to help with a Choir Competition called the Coral Festival, scheduled to start on 13 May 2017.

The money was presented yesterday at the Divine Mercy, Malololelei.

Director and Chair of the Little Helpers Group, Kereti Ah Liki, said they were delighted to help the cause, saying Opera under the Stars 2016 was a huge success.

“We want to thank the Archbishop for always praying for us and pushing us to do better for ourselves and for the community and the church as a whole,” she said.

“The success of the night was because of your presence and families and friends who supported the event.

“So today we would like to give the fruits from the event in terms of a money donation and this will go towards as understood to the prize money for a choir competition that will be held in May.”

Archbishop Alapati Mataeliga acknowledged the support and thanked the Group for their hard work.

“The Catholic Church always believes that when you are singing you are praying twice and so like all churches music is so important in our worship and our way of life,” he said.

Speaking about the Choir Competition, Archbishop Mataeliga said it is a critical part of the Catholic Church’s plans for this year as it is the year of Mary the Mother of God.

“We are grateful to the Little Helpers,” he said.

“We thank all the organisers of the Opera under the Stars for all the hard work that you have done in preparing for the Opera in asking the artists from overseas to come and perform which was not easy.

Seven vicariates will compete in May, five vicariates from Samoa and two from New Zealand.

“We have so much talent in Samoa when it comes to whatever and we like to help our young people to develop these talents to serve our country and God as well.”
