Healing through the traditional touch

Going back in time, the full body massage (fofo) was one of the more popular methods people resorted to when it comes dealing with physical pain.

The significance of full body massages have been around in Samoa for generations now, holding techniques of healing and relaxation through touch.

This healing method still thrives nowadays even with new advancements in medical technologies coming out every week.

People who feel tension within their bodies, headaches, joint problems or muscle fatigue can now receive a free full body massage courtesy of a Healing Ministry.

Leader, Mareta Percell Unutoa, said they are open to help the public.

Mrs. Unutoa came back to Samoa last year with the hope of healing people through full body massages.

She went from door to door to offer her services to anyone who needed it, and that’s when she figured out that there was an abundance of sick people in Samoa.

“We started the Healing Ministry last year but it wasn’t that big so we decided to concentrate most of our efforts towards the old people of Samoa,” she said.

“Now we want to expand our free services to everyone who is in need of it.”

“We do this for free; there are no costs for all the public.”

Moreover, she continued on to say that this program not only brings healing to people in need, but it also gives the youths of Samoa a chance to indulge in a trait.

Creating a safe environment for young unemployed people to come in to learn something useful as well as contribute to their community in a positive manner, instead of wasting their time on unnecessary acts.

Mrs. Unutoa said that she taught the boys everything they needed to know about full body massages, how to use the hot water, rocks, and mixing oils, these are all very important aspects in her line of work.

“Everyone who helps me with the massages are young volunteers” she said

“There are eight of us so far, I teach them different massaging techniques and assist them with any of their troubles”

“I massage the ladies while the boys massage the men”

Asked about her patients, Mrs. Unutoa confidently confirmed the fact that her work has already healed so many people in Samoa.

She further stated that after her massage sessions, most of her patients usually feel gratified with her massaging skill because she carefully tends to every need with precision.

She said that news of her work has spread around the island through her satisfied patients and she would like the Ministry to continue its spread all over the world.

“We have helped a lot of pastors with a full body massage” she said.

“Sometimes people come from Savaii just to receive our services.”

“I just want word of our services to spread more, so that anyone from anywhere can come over for free full body healing massages."
