Athletics Samoa is wasting no time.

It has started its preparations for the upcoming Mini Games in Vanuatu in December.

It starts its two-day open trials at Apia Park yesterday.

The trial is opened to athletes here and abroad willing to represent Samoa in Vanuatu.

President of the Samoa National Athletics Association, Jerry Brunt. said they want to get together a very strong team for Vanuatu.

“Our time trials today were basically to prepare and identify our team for the Mini Games in Vanuatu,” he said.

“It was opened to everyone who wanted to take part and we were fortunate to have overseas runners coming over.”

Brunt said Vanuatu is only one of the competitions they are looking at.

“We are also planning ahead for the Commonwealth in April next year, as well as the Polynesian tournament in November next year.

“We are hoping to have a squad after these time trials to develop and build up not only for the mini games but also for the Commonwealth and Polynesian Games.”

All these tournaments will be used to develop a strong team for the Pacific Games in 2019, to be hosted by Samoa.

Brunt acknowledged the interschool athletics competition for its contribution to the development of athletes.
