The Ombudsman, Maiava Iulai Toma, has provided an update on Samoa's first national inquiry into family violence during a meeting in Apia with Commonwealth Secretary General, Patricia Scotland.

Maiava highlighted the important role of traditional and church leaders in addressing the issue.

The Secretary General said Samoa's approach was an excellent example of how such an important issue could be addressed in other countries.

The Ombudsman's office receives a range of financial and technical assistance from the Commonwealth Secretariat, which is based in London.
