Cabinet has approved the appointment of Lemalu Lafi Sanerivi as the new Chief Executive Officer for the Samoa Qualification Authority.

The Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio confirmed the appointment yesterday.

Lemalu replaces former C.E.O. Fepuleai Sinapi Moli who passed away in New Zealand around April this year.

Loau told the Samoa Observer that Lemalu was amongst five other applicants shortlisted for the position.

“He is a former teacher and a professional academic,” he said.

“He was one of the people that was responsible in drafting the legislation for the S.Q.A. and is not unfamiliar in the education sector. He has worked in Fiji and has returned to Samoa to work.”

The Minister added that Lemalu will be starting soon with his new job once the Cabinet Directive and other paper works is completed.

Lemalu was a Senior Educational Assessment Specialists for Accreditation within the Secretariat of the Pacific Board for Educational Assessment (S.P.B.E.A) in Fiji.

He led the development of the Pacific Register of Qualifications and Standards for the fifteen Pacific forum countries.

The new C.E.O. had worked as a Professional Officer for the S.P.B.E.A. Board’s Senior Secondary School Qualifications from 2001 to 2004.

In 2005 – 2008 Lemalu served the S.Q.A. and was responsible for the development of the Samoa Qualifications Framework and its related Quality Assurance systems.

He was a secondary school teacher, college principal and a lecturer at the then Secondary Teachers College currently known as the Faculty of Education under the National University of Samoa.

Lemalu was also a former Assistant Director of Education in charge of Curriculum Development and Examination and Assessment activities with the Education department.
