Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sai’lele Malielegaoi has described car racing as a “stupid hobby”.

He was responding to a question from Samoa Observer on whether the Government would legalise and allocate a space for car racing enthusiasts.

“Why would the Government give them a space when they did not provide us with a letter requesting it? It would be unreasonable for the Government to give a space without a request. I didn’t receive any letter from them and even if we did receive a letter from them, what can we give them,” he said.

Car clubs in Samoa should consider leasing land for their sport, added the Prime Minister.

“Their sport is a sport for rich people and they have to also look at the fact that they are rich and that means they should look at a land, that they can lease out and be able to pay that lease to conduct their hobby.  This is the hobby where every kid owns a car and these people come from rich families and this should be easy for the parents of these kids to afford to pay for a lease for their children to conduct their hobby.”

But the children should keep away from government-owned roads with the Prime Minister stressing the need for caution for public safety.

“But the only thing that they cannot do is race on government roads. That is prohibited because it will cost the lives of others when they race using government roads and this is why their sport is not important to the Government. But the safety of the people is more important to us and that is important to us to ensure the people are not affected from these stupid hobby.”
