Most young people are rushing to find houses near the Apia Township.

That’s because everyone has their own preference of where they want to stay.

But for 25-year-old Fereti Masefau; he prefers life in the village.

The man from Malaela said he doesn’t want to have anything to do with moving to Apia.

“I’ve lived here all my life so I cannot imagine myself staying anywhere else but here,” he told the Village Voice.

“I think everything is always running smoothly on our side. We live in a beautiful natural environment; we have beaches and in fact I live right next to the beach so I can go there and relax or sometimes I go there to help when it gets packed with tourists and guests.”

“Our food is from nature and it’s a quiet life if you stay in the village.”

“I mean there has been a lot of changes after the tsunami that we went through; but as you can see people have tried their best to move on.”

“It was hard and such a sad experience for us but we’re still moving forward.”

“Other than that, I think we barely face any problems because we have excellent village governance and everyone just live in harmony because we consider our village to be one big family.”

Fereti is a farmer and he said there’s nothing difficult about doing his job.

He added “I also help out the communities in our village with whatever they need. Whether it’s cleaning the environment or working together with the other untitled men especially during curfews and especially making sure people are following the rules.”

“I love that life and that’s why whenever I go to my rugby games when we have tournaments, after the games I just couldn’t wait to come back home.”

“I’m not saying Apia or other places are bad; I’m just saying this is the life I’m used to now and it’s hard to be away from it even if it is for a little while.”
