Winners with Get into Rugby

Get into rugby mini festival ended with the Upolu finale at Marist Brothers Primary School, Mulivai field on Wednesday.

Sixteen different primary schools from Faleata and Vaimauga districts competed against each other in tag rugby.

The schools were Lepea Primary School, Vaimea Primary School, Vaivase Primary School, Tanugamanono Primary School, Vailima Primary School, Apia Primary School, Falefitu Primary School, Moataa Primary School, Vaigaga Primary School, Aleisa Primary School, Ah Mu Primary School, Vaitele Primary School, Maagiagi Primary School, Vailele Primary School, Vaiusu Primary School, and Marist Primary School. 

Vaivase Primary School claimed first place in the Under eight mix team, Ah Mu Primary School took the Under 10 mix team, Vaiusu Primary School won the Under 12 girls and Under 12 boys competition was taken by Vailima Primary School. Vaigaga Primary School walked away with the Under 14 girls’ title, while the Under 14 boys’ title was won by Apia Primary School.

Samoa Rugby Union Competitions Development Manager, Taala Anae Tui Komiti said the purpose of the competition is the finals between Faleata and Vaimauga districts.

“There are six different divisions, under eight mix girls and boys, under 10 mix boys and girls, under 12 girls, under 12 boys, Under 14 boys and Under 14 girls.

“The aim is to build the confidence and skills level from the mini festival that we had in the Faleata and Vaimauga districts.”

 Taala said it is a successful tournament because of the sportsmanship and excitement displayed by the children. 

“It is totally different in terms of their skill levels, the individual skills these players showcase; they really enjoy the competition.

“The games are not only enjoyed by the children but also teachers and parents who are loyal supporters.

“We are also promoting fun in the competition especially for the young generation but also improvements through skills of passing, catching the ball, and running.

 “It is going to be an annual event, we are going to move out to other districts in the third term and all that depends on our financial support received.

The main sponsors are the Australian Government, Tradepac Company Limited, World Rugby, Oceania Rugby.

Prices were funded by Tradepac Company Limited and that included trophies, cash prices.

 “The improvements that we are looking at are focusing in other districts both in Upolu and Savaii. Another improvement is the officiating of the games in reference to working hard on our referees and also coaching.

“It is amazing how everyone has turned out for the event, school inspectors and school principals have all been so inclusive and helpful making it possible to host,” Taala said.
