A 75-year-old woman of Fagali’i has become the latest road fatality in Samoa.

The deceased is the victim of an alleged hit and run incident on Friday night.

A 19-year-old man allegedly struck the elderly woman when she was crossing the road.

The driver has since been found and charged with negligent driving causing death.

This was confirmed by Police Superintendent and Media Spokesperson, Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo.

“The driver was brought in for questioning by the Police and had since been criminally charged,” he said.

“He’s held in custody until his criminal mention next month.”

Auapaau declined to comment on the details of the case.

But a Police officer at the scene said the driver sped off after running over the elderly woman.

They tracked down the driver and found him at their place of business in Vailele.

“He explained the reason he drove off was because he saw men from the village running towards him and he feared for his life so he took off."

“The vehicle in questions was a van.”

Fagali’i resident, Bernard Lui, told the Sunday Samoan the driver sped off when men in the village ran towards where the incident occurred.

“The elderly woman was crossing when she was struck,” he said.
