The inaugural Savai’i Fishing Tournament with its base at at Va-i-Moana Seaside Lodge ended yesterday.

The tournament was staged by the Savai’i Samoa Tourism Association (S.S.T.A), Savai’i Game Fishing Association in partnership with the Samoa International Game Fishing Association (S.I.G.F.A).

According to the Savai’i Fishing Association, it is overwhelmed by the success of the tournament with more than a hundred people taking part.

“In Samoa, Apia has always been the centre of all previous Fishing tournaments, typically taking place as a series of competitive events with specific rules applying to each event, but this week anglers from Upolu Samoa have a chance to experience and compete in the salt waters of Savai’i from the Asau Bay,” the organisers say.

The competition is made up of 13 registered vessels.

They are the Taumafai, King Fisher II, Free Spirit, Lady Saele, Pure Indulgence, Razze, Seemu, Aolele, Fish Pirates and the biggest of the vessels, the Yellow-Fin II.

There are three Savai’i boats in the competition Nimo (Faga), Minion(Asau) and All Rounder (Aganoa). Points are awarded for each fish caught, and these points are based on the weight of the catch and species.

The catch of the day for the first day was credited to Aolele with a 60.4kg yellowfin (asiasi) placing them in the lead.

On the second day, ‘Yellow Fin II’ Anglers hauled in a huge Marlin weighing 166.2kg and a beautiful Sailfish weighing 41kg, giving them a clear lead among the other Anglers, for a smashing total of 220.8points after Day 2.
