Samoa paused yesterday to honour the dedication and hard work of firefighters.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi led the tribute during the official ceremony at the Fire and Emergency Services Authority headquarters.

He congratulated the brave men and women who often risk their lives to save others and their properties.

 “We are here to join the global celebration of the International Fire Fighters Day in honour of all fire-fighters around the world, past and present, who have dedicated their lives to ensure the protection of life and properties of the communities they serve,” he said.

“ I am told that Samoa joined the international fire fighting community to hold this commemoration last year and will continue to do so as an annual event.”

The ceremony also marked the 10th anniversary of the Authority.

“Since then they have been involved in many emergencies, among them the 2009 Tsunami, Cyclone Evan in 2012, the flea market fire and Oil Tank Explosion in 2016 as well as the Chan Mow Wholesale fire,” he said.

“I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the support of Samoa’s development partners and all stakeholders who have assisted the Board of Directors, management and staff to ensure that F.E.S.A delivers its services to the public in the most effective and efficient way.

“I would also like to give and acknowledge the services of all the volunteers who have provided continuing support to F.E.S.A.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I am sure that you will all join me in wishing F.E.S.A a happy and memorable 10th anniversary and International Fire-fighters Day.

Each year on 4 May, International Fire-fighter’s Day is celebrated by many countries around the world.

The day is to show support for all fire-fighters worldwide, remember those lost or injured in the line of duty and say thank you.

Awards were also presented to fallen comrades and former members of Samoa Fire Fighters yesterday.
