A 50-year-old was yesterday granted the ultimate honour of becoming the holder of the Ulu (igoa matua) title at the village of Toāmua.

The blustery conditions in the morning failed to dampen the spirits of Maluofinao Shinn Ete and his family on the special day.

Ulu received the blessings from his family, village and Faleata district as he embarked on his new journey.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Tofā Ulu Maluofinao said he was humbled by the honour.  “To become a chief is not an easy role to take,” he said. “But to God be all the Glory for the strength and His mercy. He helps us every day and it is him through which these things are possible.”

During yesterday’s ceremony, Ulu was well supported by his family.  “I am ready to serve my family, village and the church together with the love and the support from my family,” the new Ulu title holder vowed. A big feast and traditional formalities followed.
