In Samoa, we love and share

Its true there is no place like Samoa.

According to Taualeoo Emele Sua, from the village of  Lealaoali’i, Faleasi’u, there is no where he would rather live than right here.

Aged 49, the hardworking farmer says that Samoa is blessed because we survive on love and sharing while other nations live on money.

Even with struggles here and there, Taualeoo says you have to learn to take the good with the bad.

“There are days when everything is just great for my family and there are days when it’s not,” he told the Village Voice.

“But here in my village, I guess you can say that everything is in order and it’s a peaceful life. There are times when cultural gatherings have us digging deep into our pockets but all in all, things are great.

“We are just living by the grace of God and making sure we do our best in all that we do.”

Comparing life in the urban areas and the rural villages, Taualeoo says that out in the village, it’s peaceful and fresh.

“Whenever I visit town, it’s always so stressful and everyone is just moving around trying to get places quick,” he said.

“I don’t really like how everything is out of order in town and that’s why I prefer living out here. We have a peaceful way of life and we have the village council that keeps everyone in line.

“The wind is nice and fresh out here, there’s not much noise and everything is just moving at a decent steady pace.”

And with many developments in Samoa, Taualeoo says everything is great as far as he is concerned.

“There have been many developments in Samoa and in my opinion, it’s all great,” he said.

“People’s living standards have improved and life in general is getting better as we move on into the future as a country.

“There are struggling times within families but that’s just how life is, there are good times and then there are the bad ones. You just need to know how to balance them both.”

And at the end of the day, there is no place like home for Taualeoo and Samoa will always be home.

“There is no place like Samoa,” he said. “This is home for me and I prefer the way we live life over here. Overseas, you can’t live if you don’t have money but in Samoa, you can just go borrow from another family when you need something.

“Westerners live on money and Samoa lives on love. For my family we rely a lot on plantation and we grow all sorts of crops.

“To me, this is a great way to live and there’s nothing that tough for us. When I deliver my crops then I would be able to make about $200 a day. That’s how great it is.”
