We’ve been blessed with land to work

Don’t lean on others, you don’t need to.

You have two hands and two legs to shape the kind of life you want.

That is the belief of 29-year-old Fiti Salanoa from Falefa and Sauano, Fagaloa.

Fiti is a farmer and he’s been developing his own land since 2014 by himself.

“These lands are a gift from God and taking care of it is my job every day,” he told the Village Voice.

Fiti used to work before. But he said he wasn’t completely happy with what he was doing.

He felt that he belonged somewhere else, and in 2014, he decided to move up to Sauano and start a whole new life there.

“I used to work for a company that made soap, lotions, body scrubs etc.

“It was good work but I think I felt that these lands need more of my attention, more of my energy because back then, every time I visit where I am now, I know I had the potential to turn it into my homeland.

“I guess I can say that I was someone with a vision.

“So I resigned from work in 2014, next thing I knew I was cleaning and tidying up the lands here on this mountain. It was so dark back then over here.

“The grass needed cutting so I cut it. I did everything to make it look like it does now, except for the roads.

“And my home now, I built that on my own. Everything I depend on, my food, water and everything else I need comes from the land and that’s the truth.

“For the first time in my life, I felt complete and happy because I did something big for myself.

After all his hard work, Fiti felt he’s at the right place.

“A person has to have a vision but the way I see it, the youth of today doesn’t have such mentality.

“I believe we can make our future better because the sky is the limit.

“If you just live life without any knowledge of what you really want to do in your life, you’re just wasting time.

“Imagine how you can make a difference in your life and start acting on it.”
