Parents motivate young girl to succeed

When you motivate your mind, the body will follow.

So believes 17-year-old Sisa Apulu from the village of Le’auva’a.

Sisa said her parents inspire her.

“My parents are the main reason I work hard,” she told the Village Voice.

“They (parents) want me to get a good education they never had and I’ll make sure to study hard in school.”

Sisa is the youngest of her parent’s six children. She’s in Year 12 at Leulumoega Fou College.

“My family struggles every year to budget the little money we have so that me and my other siblings can continue going to school,” she said.

“Nowadays, we all know how expensive the cost of living is and on top of our school fees, there are other obligations that the parents need to do like fa’alavelave, family activities and to take care of everything like food, water bills, electricity and so on.”

Sisa’s older brother works. He helps her father bring in some money for the family. But that’s not enough.

“Our family is doing okay but the only problem we face is in terms of money,” she said .

“Especially now that school has started, I can see my family is struggling in terms of money. But their (parents) first priority is us, they want us to be educated and that’s why I motivate myself to do well in school.”

The 17-year-old wants to become a teacher.

“I have a strong passion for teaching because I want to educate children about things they don’t know. I believe that teaching children is more than just any other career to me; it’s a way of giving back to my family. “

“You know, when I was young I always told myself that I would push through whatever obstacles I had to so I would be able to have my dream career.”

“I know it’s not going to be easy, but I will strive for the best and let God do the rest.”

Who does she look up to in life?

“My mother,” said Sisa. “She is my role model and she wants me to be a teacher when I grow up.”

“We all have mothers, and they are all different and unique. But for my mother, she’s very outgoing and strong.”

“She encourages me all the time that no matter what I face in life, I should never give up easily. Instead I should keep striving for more.”

Sisa said she is grateful to God for her parents.

“I thank God for my parents; I thank my parents for pushing me and never giving up in making sure that I go to school.”

Sisa said her family could do with some financial help.

“My school fee for this term is $120 I think, but I’m not so sure of the other three terms.”

“I’m taking Commerce and my favourite subjects are Accounting, Economic and Maths.”

“When the times come, I will make my parents proud.”
