The Acting A.C.E.O. of the Samoa Meteorology Office (M.E.T) Fuimaono Lameko Talia, has assured that no cyclone warning has been issued for Samoa.

He has, however, urged members of the public to take precaution as Cyclone Mona develops in the Pacific region.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, the A.C.E.O. explained that Cyclone Mona was located moving south east of the convergence zone to Fiji and intensified into a Category 2 Tropical Cyclone last night.

Samoa will feel this through heavy showers, strong winds and gusty periods at times during the weekend, Mr. Lameko said.

He also cautioned that northwest regions of the country will experience strong winds and high developing northerly swells are expected for coastal waters, two to three meters.

Mr. Lameko advised residents living in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides to be on the alert.

“Swimming in lakes and beaches are discouraged for the next couple of days because of the weather conditions,” he said.

“And motorists are urged to be aware of traveling in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.”

Mr. Lameko said too often tragedy occurs because locals are careless and do not heed warnings.

“For everyone’s safety,” Fuimaono explained, “please take extra care.”

He added that east coast road from Lauli’i, Solosolo and mountainous areas are vulnerable to landslides.

The A.C.E.O. also asked that members of the public check the M.E.T website and Facebook page for daily updates on the forecasts and advisories.

“Families are encouraged to make necessary preparations for the weekend,” Mr. Lameko said.
