Three Wise Cousins premieres at The Civic

The world premiere of Three Wise Cousins held at Auckland’s Civic Theatre last week was a rather different affair to the glitzy opening nights the venue is accustomed to hosting.

Colourful Samoan puletasis (dresses) were the outfits du jour on the modest red carpet. The usual parade of local celebrities was absent, a member of the Warriors league team one of the few recognisable faces.

The film debuting was Three Wise Cousins, a fish-out-of-water comedy about family and culture, in which a young New Zealand Samoan man called Adam (Neil Amituanai) ventures to his motherland to try and impress his crush Mary (Gloria Ofa Blake), who claims she only likes “real” Pacific Island men.

The event had the feel of a big family gathering - just what director/writer/co-producer Stallone Vaiaoga-Ioasa (credited in the film as “SQS”) had wanted for the first outing of his debut feature.

Three Wise Cousins was meant to be “a film for the people”, he told the audience. The howls of laughter which filled the following 90 minutes suggested he’d hit the mark.
