A New Zealand-based Samoan man who contracted dengue fever in Samoa has died, a Givealittle page set to up to him while he was at the hospital has confirmed.

According to a report on The NZ Herald, Fiaali’i Mariner was admitted to the hospital suffering from dengue fever.

But his condition deteriorated and he has passed away.

Attempts are being made to get a comment from the Ministry of Health.

But the Givealittle Page confirmed his death.

“It is with great sadness and heartbreak to inform you all that Fiaalii has passed away,” writes Christine Freebury, who set up the Givealittle page.

“Please pray for Alei and her beautiful children. This page will continue to accept donations until 22 December when all funds will be given to Alei. Thank you once again for your amazing support.”

In another post written last Thursday, it said: “We are aware of the situation up to this morning at 11am. He has contracted Pneumonia in one lung and the hospital have advised a serious situation.

“We have people on the ground in Samoa currently reviewing what options we can assist with including Air Ambulance. However, Alei has confirmed to me that the Doctor has stipulated he is not stable enough to fly home.

“Alei and her sister in law have been to the NZ High Commission in Samoa but they have confirmed unable to assist. They have also contacted our New Zealand Prime Minister but I have not heard if any response was received. I today have also emailed Jacinda Ardern directly to see what assistance she can come up with. I will update when I hear back from her.

“We are hoping that he will stabilise and fingers are crossed so that we can assist in getting him home for treatment.

“He had a heart attack last weekend therefore his heart is weak. He is at a very critical time in Samoa.”

According to The NZ Herald, more than $10,000 had been raised through crowd-funding.

Fiaali’i Mariner had returned to start up a car rental business.
