The art of making a sei was on the agenda in Apia yesterday.
The event staged at ANZ Bank Apia was organised by the Samoa Cancer Society as part of Pinktober.
Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O) of the Samoa Cancer Society, Shelley Burich, said the event is to encourage creativity and working together to achieve a common goal. In this case, it is creating public awareness about breast cancer.
“As you know with Sei Pua Day coming up on Friday we are always on the look out for fresh pua. We actually bought a lot of artificial puas and we can on sell them.
“This was just an idea to get the community involved where they can actually learn to make paper puas and we also took the opportunity to make pink ribbons which will also be sold on Sei Pua Day.
“What I really like about this activity was that it again brought together other N.G.O’s that have common interest as the Samoa Cancer Society.
“We do a lot of things separately and we don’t often get the opportunity to come together as a collective group.
“I saw this as a really nice opportunity to come together and learn about each other’s N.G.Os and common interest and also possibly come together as a strong advocacy group so we can share our issues and present them as one.
“I strongly believe that together we are a stronger voice than just one organization trying to advocate for a certain issue.”
Ms. Burich that this is the first time Samoa Cancer Society has had and activity like this.
“Usually we have a lot of volunteers who are always willing to volunteer their time but this time we actually went out and saw some other N.G.O’s so I’m really excited about the possibility of this actually strengthening and growing into a strong advocacy health group,” she said.
“So the next big thing is the Sei Pua Day which will be this Friday and it will be most of the day. We will have roaming street sellers selling the Sei Pua and also ribbons.
“It will be the artificial flowers that we will be selling for a set prize we will have fresh puas as well which is donated by the Informal Gardener’s Group.
“For the fresh pua we will just have people make a donation to get a fresh pua and then we also have a few companies that want to have puas set up in their companies or businesses for a whole day with our donation collection boxes.”
