Saint Joseph’s College stole the spotlight in the Zone B Athletics competition by taking the trophies for all the boys’ divisions.

Seven schools competed in track and field events. The schools included Maluafou College, Saint Mary’s College, Chanel College, Church College Pesega, Saint Joseph’s College, Faleata College and Robert Louis Stevenson School.

In the junior girls division Saint Mary’s College came first while Chanel College claimed the intermediate girls’ title, whereas Church College Pesega took the overall senior girls division.

The Secretary of Zone B Sister Pelenatete Peni who is also the Principal of Saint Mary’s College said: “The importance of today’s event all refers back to it being part of the school curriculum, and this is for throughout the whole of Samoa. Physical education is very important and sports such as athletics, rugby, netball, rugby league, volleyball etc., they are part of the school curriculum where all these young people are encouraged and enforced to participate.

“Mainly because a lot of young people and witnessed today, they have the talents, it’s a golden opportunity to have these kinds of sports to bring out their God given talents,” Sister Pelenatete said.

“The main challenge is getting these secondary schools students to be properly trained in skills relevant for any kind of sport. At the same time there is a great lack of resources, appropriate equipment needed by different schools to help them improve in all the sporting areas.

“In my own opinion, future improvements would be having the proper physical education teachers that help in this particular programme in all schools.

“In every school the administration and teaching staff would have its own programme to allocate for sports, training, physical education as well as balancing it with academic studies,” she stated.

“I don’t think any school administration would like to focus too much on sports, and forsake academics, so it’s really a balanced approach to what the whole school curriculum is about.

“I encourage all these young people to value their God given talents in any form of sports and make good use of it. It is all for their sake, then families, and of course for their schools but ultimately for the glory of God,” she added.
