Samoa in Super Rugby contest

A team from Samoa will contest the Super Rugby title.

But it’s not the Super Rugby as we know it today.

It will be a Super Rugby 10s tournament to be held in Auckland in 2017.

The announcement of the newest global rugby event is scheduled to be made at Takapuna, Auckland, this afternoon.

The announcement will be fronted by Tana Umaga- Blues coach, Jerome Kaino-Blues captain, Ihaia West-Blues, Israel Dagg-Crusaders, Damien McKenzie-Chiefs, Liam Messam-Chief, David Higgins-founder and director of Duco Events and Nigel Cass-Chief Strategy & Operations Officer, New Zealand Rugby.

“Kicking off February 11th and 12th, 2017 at Suncorp Stadium, the event will mark the start of the Super Rugby season in New Zealand and Australia for at least the next four years,” an invitation from Duco Events said.

“The tournament will feature all ten New Zealand and Australia Super Rugby clubs plus four invitational teams from France, South Africa, Japan and Samoa.”

Contacted for a comment yesterday, the C.E.O. of Samoa Rugby Union, Faleomavaega Vincent Fepuleai, was coy on the plans.

“We are actually putting off a few comments because that is actually launched tomorrow (today) in Australia and then New Zealand,” he said.

Faleomavaega, however, confirmed that there would be a team from Samoa.

“We haven’t thought of a name yet but we will launch everything officially tomorrow (today).”
