A new sport, Tag, has arrived in Samoa.

And the Executive of the Samoa Tag Federation (S.T.F.) is doing its best to promote what the sport offers in terms of recreational and health benefits.

Last Saturday, a fun-filled family event was hosted at the Marist Grounds Mulivai to launch the sport.

Tag Sport is a non-contact team game in which each player wears a belt that has two Velcro tags attached to it or shorts with Velcro patches.

The mode of play is based on rugby league with many similarities to touch rugby.

The man driving the sport is President of Samoa Tag Federation, Faaofonu’u Junior Leota.

“Like any new sport our focus is creating grass-root programmes and clinics to try and promote Tag and get the sport out there to our people,” he said.

Fa’aofonu’u added one of S.T.F’s aim was to introduce Tag to schools, village communities and sports clubs.

“It will drive the Federation to create as many possible tournaments catering for all ages. The idea of a family event to coincide with the launch was to strongly point out the advantage of the sport of Tag.”

“You see with Tag, everyone in your family can play, whether it is your youngest six-year-old daughter or your 60-year-old grandfather, it’s a sport for everyone.”
