The Renewable Energy Division (R.E.D) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is on a mission.

And that mission is to implement activities and ways to achieve the target for our country to be 100 % percent renewable energy by the year 2025.

As we  celebrate the environment week this week, R.E.D had also launched a new model this week showcasing what a renewable town of Apia and Samoa will look like.

Aggie Wulf, a Senior Renewable Energy Officer said the model illustrates what the town will look like is we achieve our target.

“We put together this model to try and showcase what the town of Apia will look like if our target, the 100% Renewable Energy will be achieved throughout the year 2017-2025.

“So as you can see here, this is a dam, we can say that this is the Afulilo dam and it generates power and it is connected to the E.P.C Poles.

“We also have the solar panel as well, for example we have the ones at Faleolo, Tuanaimato and other places. And as you can see here as well, we have the windmill here which is at Vailoa Aleipata.

“So it’s like a small demonstration of what Samoa will look like if we put our 100% percent focus in trying and convert our electricity from renewable energy sources. You know like the sun, the wind, hydro and bio mass and gas.

“We are looking at all these ways and implement these to try and achieve our target which is to be 100% renewable energy by the year 2025. So all our plans and work from now on, is mainly towards achieving that goal.

“Our role is to promote climate change mitigation through renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Our mission is to work together in close partnerships with communities and stakeholders for the pursuit of sustainable development.”The division which was established ten years ago is guided by the theme “Save our environment, use clean renewable energy and be efficient.”
