Sixty-five new titleholders were bestowed with the Lupematasila and Ailao titles at Falelatai yesterday morning.

The ceremony started with prayers of thanksgiving by Reverend Elder Ta'utiaga Senara.

Rizvan Keniseli and his father, Keniseli Seiuli, were among those receiving titles.

In his 30s, Mr. Keniseli told the Samoa Observer that becoming a Chief comes with responsibilities.

“Family obligations and family love is why we take on the title, it is not for show, but an indication that family means something to us,” he said.

“I take on this title with my father by my side is something to be proud of and I am happy about it.

“Every Samoan can attest to the fact that in our families our main focus is to serve our elders, our extended families and our parents.

“And it is something I, as a Samoan, am proud to be a part of,” said Mr. Keniseli.

“We were taught as young men to serve in the kitchen, to be a part of the untitled men, to serve the purpose of the village and now being a Chief means more of a promotion in our culture and I am happy and ready to serve my family and village,” he said.
