No money but father has faith

Life is tough

But hard work opens the door to opportunities.

That is the opinion of Fata Felise Venasio, 38, of Lauli’i.

The father of six said whatever struggles there are in life, his solution is to keep working harder.

“I depend on our plantation for food every day,” he said.

“I used to work as a carpenter but I stopped working because no one else in my family can get food.”

But money is a big problem, he said.

“As you can see, none of my kids is attending school today. Why? Because we are out of money,” he said.

“This is a daily struggle as we have to pay for village and church donations as well. But we have a plantation where we fetch pawpaw and other stuff for our food.”

Fata said he is a Christian. As such he has faith in God that things will be okay.

“I know some people don’t pray but I pray a lot,” he said.

“I believe this is the only way that strengthens me and my family.”

He said there is nothing that can be done about the cost of living.

“We have problems when we don’t work the land and we are too lazy to go and look for food. That’s why I’m not complaining because I work hard and whatever I make, we use it for our daily sustenance.”

As for the future, Fata’s hope is to build a better house for his children.

And he said they could do with some help.

“Our income is not enough to build a better house,” he said. “We live a basic life.”
