Two people from the big island of Savai’i died as a result of drowning.

This was confirmed by the Police Spokesperson, Su’a Muliaga Tiumalu, yesterday.

The first death was a 3-year-old who drowned at a river in Asau last Saturday.

“Last Saturday the 3-year-old went with his grandmother to do their washing at the river,” said Su’a.

“However, at one point while the grandmother was doing her laundry she didn’t know where the 3-year-old was.

“She started looking for him and she later found him in the river already dead.”

Su’a said the matter is being investigated by the police.

Another incident involved a 17-year-old from the village of Taga.

Su’a said the matter was reported from the hospital at Fualalo.

“The incident occurred on Sunday, 22nd January,” he said.

“The 17-year-old was taken to the Fualalo District Hospital and confirmed that he died from drowning.

“The deceased was swimming on Sunday with some of his friends and he died there from drowning.

“At the moment the hospital is satisfied with the cause of death and there is no need for a post mortem.”
