Friends welcome New Year on island time

On a spur of the moment decision, Naomi and Amelia from New Zealand decided to head for the islands to bring in the New Year.

After having record cold temperatures in New Zealand, the two friends wanted a summer holiday.

“Amelia and I just wanted to have a long holiday in the sun, it’s been such a long winter so we just wanted to get a way and enjoy some sun,” said Naomi.

“It’s our first time in Samoa and I think it’s so beautiful and nice. The scenery is just so beautiful, it’s green and lush everywhere you go, even though it’s so hot here.”

“Coming to Samoa was kind of just a spur of the moment decision,” said Amelia.

“We both hadn’t been so we thought let’s do it! The heat was the first thing that hit me; I was surprised how green it is here even though it’s really hot here.”

Arriving on the December 28, the girls hit the local hot spots and on New Year’s Eve joined in the fun as Sheraton Aggie Grey’s hosted their masquerade ball.

“We went to the ocean trench and that was just gorgeous,” said Naomi.

“It was a highlight for me. I had seen pictures online beforehand so we definitely knew we wanted to do that.”

“We’ve been nanas’ here pretty much and we didn’t go out except for the New Years Eve party here at the hotel,” said Amelia.

“I thought the party was pretty good and the music was great, there were some real bangers in there. We mixed and mingled a bit with everyone, but we didn’t go too hard out because we’re only here for a couple of days and we didn’t want to be hung over,” she laughs.

“It was a good busy party; I thought it was bigger than I expected it to be with so many people there,” added Naomi.

Although the girls have noticed that Apia town seemed a little emptier than they expected due to the holidays, it hasn’t dampened their spirits because they were looking for a relaxing place to chill out.

“It has surprised me how little people are out and about during the day,” said Naomi.

“We were walking around and realized that we seemed to be the only people walking around sometimes. But obviously you guys are smarter than us and avoid the hottest time of the day,” she laughed.

“For me, it’s just been all about relaxing,” said Amelia.

“We went to Lalomanu and it was just so pretty. We’ll definitely be back. If we had a bit more time, I would have liked to go to Savaii but will do that next time. I would definitely come back again, this is more of a relaxing destination rather than activity based one, but I have been enjoying relaxing here.”
