Vusa Fiti of A’ufaga is more than happy about the many tourists visiting his village.

According to Vusa; the rapid change slowly occurred right after the time of the tsunami in 2009.

“We still think about those who have passed on from the disaster in 2009,” he tells Village Voice.

“We are still thankful to God because some of us are still here today and we try to keep in mind that when things or situations like these happen; it always comes with a lesson for us all and that is to be prepared for what’s coming next.

“Despite the tragedy; our village is trying to do its best to continue on bringing and attracting more tourists into Samoa especially to do sightseeing on our side of the country.

“That is one of the main goals that we are aiming for to achieve every year.”

Vusa went on to say that many of the villagers have moved away from the coastal areas to live in the  high areas. In fact some families have spent years developing their lives up on the mountains.

“I think what I’m trying to say here is that it is important and it’s a must to always be prepared for natural disasters. We don’t need to be told when to prepare because no one knows everything but God.”

Vusa is also quite thankful that even with the tsunami in 2009; they still get a lot of tourists coming in to explore their lands.

“We love having tourists here and we are happy that it’s a continuous improvement for our village.

“We need these people because not only do we want them to experience the beauty of Samoa but also they are a big part of this country’s income. And with that as a help in the tourism industry; it does help our people as well in terms of employment at the many new accommodation venues being set up.

“Let us work together to keep our country alive and beautiful for the sake of our economy. More tourists coming into Samoa means more money for this country’s development.”
