Rugby chief denies coaching list

The Chief Executive Officer of the Samoa Rugby Union, Faleomavaega Vincent Fepulea’i, has strongly refuted a list of applicants for the vacant Sevens coach position floating on social media.

The list names Gordon Tietjens, Waisale Serevi, Stephen Betham, Fa’amaoni Lalomilo, Brian Lima, Faaofo Junior Leota, Soifua John Schuster and Ramsay Tomokino as applicants for the position.

Contacted for a comment, Faleomavaega said he does not know where such a list came from as the Union has not released anything.

“I refute that list because there shouldn’t be a list released in the first place,” he said.

“The list is being handled by the Board and the candidates are currently being interviewed."

“No official list has been released by the Union because if it was then it would have come straight from me.”

During an earlier interview, Faleomavaega denied claims Gordon Tietjens was asked to apply for the position.

“We saw reports in the paper that he (Gordon) said the Rugby Union has sought his help but we haven’t,” he explained.

“He is welcomed to apply if he hasn’t already applied but the opportunity was open to anyone; local and overseas. It wasn’t restricted to anyone.”

The Sevens coaching position became vacant after the Union sacked Damian McGrath and his management team including Assistant Coach, Muliagatele Brian Lima. The sacking is now the subject of a lawsuit against the Union.
