October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

It is an annual campaign for the Samoa Cancer Society to increase awareness of the disease that affects hundreds of Samoan women each year.

While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget or don’t know how, to take the steps to have a plan to detect breast cancer in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.

Pinktober has made a lot of progress in creating breast cancer awareness but there is still a long way to go and we need everyone’s help!

“We are delighted to be launching Pinktober once again, with the ANZ Bank and Colgate-Palmolive (Fiji) Ltd,” a statement from the Samoa Cancer Society says.

“Not only will we have the Colgate-Palmolive (Fiji) brand supporting our breast cancer awareness efforts and the ANZ Bank staff wearing their pink uniform on Fridays, but this year Rugby League Samoa has pledged their support for the Pinktober campaign by displaying the pink ribbon on the match officials uniforms, and the National team’s casual wear for the upcoming Test Match against Fiji on Saturday 8th Oct.”

The Minister of Health, Tuitama Dr. Leao Tuitama, in his capacity as Patron of the society will officially open the Pinktober breast cancer awareness campaign.  One person on average is diagnosed with cancer in Samoa every two weeks, making breast cancer the leading cause of death amongst Samoan women.

In 2014, 73% of cancer cases referred to the Samoa Cancer Society, were women – emphasizing the need to learn what the warning signs are and knowing how to do breast self-examination, is your best chance of fighting cancer.
