By 5am yesterday, the Apia Township slowly but surely filled up.

At the break of dawn, Beach Road was filled by thousands of marchers who turned up eagerly to celebrate their nation’s independence.

The annual parade is a big occasion. Away from the traditional entertainment, it is the most participated event of all Independence Day celebration festivities.

The different uniforms worn by the marchers lit up the streets of Apia town with an array of colours for a couple of hours.

This year, close to 70 groups participated in the march.

It lasted almost two hours.

One of the biggest groups was the Samoa Adventist Youth with more than 300 members from all over Samoa.

The first of June, is a significant public holiday for Samoa, as 56 years ago was the first time Samoa achieved its independence from the New Zealand Government.

It is a major occasion and participants in the march included school children, government ministries, organizations, businesses and family groups.

This was the second time the Independence Day program was held in front of the government building.

The parade was led by the Ministry of Police and the Royal Samoa Police band.
