Samoa might be celebrating but the Ministry of Police is not relaxing.

They are camping to ensure the safety of Samoans at this time of the year.

“There are numerous events that occur on this day and it has been labelled as one of the busiest holidays for Police Officers,” said Police Superintendent and Media Spokesperson Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo.

“To ensure the safety of our people during the festivities, Police Officers are camped at the headquarters, to assure that every aspect of the celebrations is manned and covered by the Police Officers.

“Aside from participating in the parade, we have Officers controlling traffic while others are stationed at the outposts to respond to calls for assistance; we also have officers escorting and providing security details for the V.I.P.’s.

“Furthermore we have our Officers stand by for the events happening at Faleata Sports Complex, such as the car show and the boxing,” he said.

Auapa’au also urged members of the public to be vigilant.

He reminded that while some people are in celebration mode, others are out looking for trouble.

“So make sure your car is locked at all times and take your personal belongings. Please report any illegal activity you see but don’t take the law into your own hands,” said Auapa’au.

“Also as Samoa is celebrating its 56 years of Independence, please consider the reality that comes from drunk driving.

“Please if you drink, don’t drive; get in a taxi or have a designated driver,” he said.

There are close to 500 Police Officers who are on duty until the camp closes tomorrow.
