Why Samoa needs Pacific Games

Dear Editor,

Re: M.P. explains anti Pacific Games

The Pacific Games is a much-needed stepping stone for Samoan athletes to go onto the next level of competition which is the Commonwealth Games.

Then use the Commonwealth Games as a stepping stone to the big time, which is the Olympics. It is a 3 step graduation to the top.

So no, I don’t agree with you that the Pacific Games is a waste of time. The weightlifting team secured Samoa’s greatest medal haul at the Commonwealth Games on the back of their consistent performances at the regional championships and the Pacific Games.

Then in 2008, the Olympic silver medal was won. It is no coincidence that 2007-2010 was the greatest medal winning period in Samoan sporting history with golds coming at the South Pacific Games in 2007, then the (eventual silver) at Olympics in 2008 and then the 3 gold medals at Commonwealth Games in 2010 when Samoa was even beating New Zealand on the medal table for about a week.
