The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (F.E.S.A.) will join the world in celebrating the International Fire Fighters Day (I.F.F.D.) this Friday.

I.F.F.D. is a time where the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible.

It is also a day in which current and past fire fighters can be thanked for their contributions.

F.E.S.A, in statement, indicated they will celebrate with a bang this year with numerous of activities planned out, such as marathons, poster competitions and more.

“An annual event to celebrate the service of all fire fighters around the world including our local fire fighters and also to remember those we’ve lost in the line of duty,” the statement said.

“We have a lot planned for this day such as our 12km marathon in the morning for all our supporting agencies and government ministries as well as our partnership organisations at 5.30am.”

“This will be followed by our opening ceremony and booth display and school poem, speech and poster competition.”

According to F.E.S.A., 10 schools have been invited to participate this year not only in our school competitions, but also in our fun games.

“We hope that this will attract more kids to see fire fighter as a future career.”

“Highlight of this day will be our fire fighters challenge where four fire fighters from each station around Samoa will take part in a challenge utilising all the special features of our newest member of our fuzo fleet, our 30m ladder truck.”

The F.E.S.A. has called on members of the public to participate in this annual event.

“So come down and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed because it will be a fun filled day guaranteed.”

The Firefighters also calls on the public to wear a blue and red ribbon to celebrate with them.

According to I.F.F.D., firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property.

“Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry. In all cases it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life.”

“International Fire Fighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May. “

“On this date you are invited to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all.”

“At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters worldwide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year.”

“By proudly wearing and displaying blue and red ribbons pinned together or by participating in a memorial or recognition event, we can show our gratitude to firefighters everywhere.”

“The I.F.F.D. ribbons are linked to colours symbolic of the main elements firefighters work with – red for fire and blue for water. These colours also are internationally recognised as representing emergency service,” says I.F.F.D. website.
