A participatory 3D Model (P3D Model) was launched yesterday during the opening of the National Environment Week.

In an interview with the Senior Watershed Operations and Monitoring Officer, Lotomaualalo Levi, she said the project is one of the priorities for the Water Resources Management division of the M.N.R.E.

“We have done a lot of rehabilitation operations like tree planting, monitoring of rubbish and waste disposal along the river,” she said.

“This 3D model is a planning tool and it’s a very important tool for the management in terms of planning and conservation but it is also a problem analysis too.

“A workshop for the model was conducted on the 18th to the 21st of October and the villages of Fagalii and Moataa.

“The key features of the catchment especially the rivers and the upland areas where the degraded upland areas that need it to be rehabilitated.

“This is a planning tool and it is also an educational tool.”

Ms. Levi said the model helps them see the use of land in the area.

“For instance, we now know of all the areas that people have already cultivated and developed. We are also aware of the critical areas such as sources of the rivers and the degraded areas that people have deforested with settlements and other purposes.

“We can also see the land use now and from there we can plan and say okay this is the degraded side so we need to plant more trees there.

“Most of the activities have already been implemented but we have just constructed this one but most of the conservation activities have been implemented already.”
