A pageant with a difference

The countdown has started for the Bluesky Miss Samoa Pageant 2016 with seven of the eight contestants vying for the crown assembling this week to prepare for what promises to be a ‘Pageant with a Difference.’

And living up to its name, the Samoa Event’s Incorporated (SEI) is planning more than just a show of beauty, but a competition that will empower the contestants to become better citizens when the curtain falls.

To that end, as a lead up to pageant night on September 9th contestants over the coming days will have the chance to hear from some of the dynamic leaders from both government and private sector.

“Exposing the contestants to issues in the field of Information Technology, Trade, Tourism, Banking, Health, Environment to name a few, is an investment in the girls to understand Samoa,” said SEI’s chaperone Lemalu Lina Slade, a former Miss Samoa contestant in her heyday.

“The presentations will help them be more informed and learn experiences on where Samoa stands.  Hopefully it will provide insight and assist the girls to make the right choices for their futures."

To get things rolling, Bluesky Samoa’s Chief Executive Adolfo Montenegero yesterday took the lead with his presentation on Samoa’s Information Communication Technology’s evolution.

He was followed by words from Computer Services Limited, Deputy Chief Executive Rita Eteuati.

“Samoa has made some headway when it comes to ICT but more needs to be done in terms of more IT Samoan technical experts, ,” she said “Due to our isolation, ICT is the gateway for Samoa to the 21st Century without a doubt.”

At the Bank of the South Pacific, Taituuga Maryann Lameko-Vaai, the girls were complimented for standing up in this year’s Pageant.

“You should be very proud of yourselves to be part of the pageant, because it’s related to profiling our tourism industry and our identity as Samoans,” said the BSP’s General Manager.

“I wish you a most memorable pageant.”
