Laulu Fialelei is a family man.
Despite his daily struggles, he still tries his best to provide for his family.
The father of three from Vailima lives in an incomplete home with his wife and their children.
For 18 years, he has worked and managed to move out of their family house to start his own home. It has been three years now since they lived independently.
He would often leave his family behind and travel because of work, and according to him, his biggest fear is leaving his family behind in a half-built home.
“I am the only who works and I do not rely on others to help support my family. Whatever I could earn out off my own hands is what we try to budget, in all things we try to survive on,” Mr. Fialelei said.
“Now that I am married and I have my own family, it is my responsibility to look after my own family instead of relying on others.”
“This house is what I built, everything that I was able to earn I try to fix what I had. I wait for whatever money that I have to build this house that we live in,” the 34-year-old said.
“I want this house to be stable and more secured because with my work, I mostly travel for months and it is just my wife and children who are here and the house is not yet complete.”
“My wife lives far away from here in the rural area and it is hard for her to come to school. With the income that I make, it is never enough to build the entire house at once.”
Mr. Fialelei shared to the Village Voice team that life has not been easy, but no matter what he always works hard.
“My wife is in school, planning to become a teacher. I believe that once she is done with school then she would be able to help out and share the load of providing for our family.”
“I have to pay for my wife’s school fees and my eldest child’s fees as well.”
“The water supply is good and we have electricity as well, which was one of the hardest things to setup. I am concerned for my children’s future, however I thankful that we have our own land to have our own home on. This is our own land,” Mr. Fialelei said.
